Maryland DUI Lawyer: To Prevent DUIs, Bartenders Are Being Trained

Each day as a Maryland DUI lawyer, I represent individuals who have been accused of driving while intoxicated charges. Many of these people were arrested for driving drunk after being served a too many drinks at a nearby restaurant or bar. Therefore, a group of concerned residents believed that bartenders can take a more influential role in whether individuals under the influence get behind the wheel or not. Therefore, these they are demanding more training for those who serve alcohol, to help prevent drunk driving arrests, accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

A DUI task force has been formed with one main goal - educating both servers, bartenders, and drinkers of the dangers of alcohol consumption, as well as drinking and driving. Meetings for the drunk driving prevention task force began in early January. They hope that their efforts will mobilize the community as well as influence local legislation and law enforcement.

Research conducted by the DUI task force discovered that approximately one-third of all individuals arrested for driving under the influence got behind the wheel after leaving licensed establishment serving alcohol.

In order to fight this, the task force hopes to create guidelines for not only consuming alcohol responsibly, but serving it as well. Appropriate training would help servers and bartenders be more aware of intoxication, and help prevent patrons from overconsuming liquor. Employees would learn how to properly notify management of overly intoxicated individuals, as well as other techniques to keep people safe. The DUI task force has also recommended that restaurants and bars offer food specials, rather than drink specials to help discourage patrons from drinking. Because it has been challenging in the past to enforce state laws banning the service of alcohol to intoxicated persons, many servers and bartenders have had a difficult time "cutting off" willing customers. However, the coalition hopes that training the servers will help them easily handle a difficult situation.

Maryland Criminal Lawyer: Burglary Charges Avoided for Former Baltimore Raven

Practicing in a metropolitan area, an experienced Maryland criminal lawyer is likely to see numerous examples of professional athletes accused of a variety of criminal charges. Cases handled and dropped are similar to that of Orlando "Zeus" Brown, the former Baltimore Ravens star who was facing criminal charges of burglary and destruction of property. He has been accused of breaking into the home of his former wife, Mira Brown while she was away on vacation. The two were divorced in 2004, but according to court documents, the two remain in a heated battle over custody and child support payments. While Mira Brown was on vacation, someone broke the front door and entered her home. Once inside the house, the intruder tore the basement curtains, defecated in a toilet, and stormed through her closet. Additionally, she received two messages from her former husband, one of which stated that he had entered the house while she was away.

By September, he was arrested and charged with breaking and entering. Formally, he was charged with fourth-degree burglary and malicious destruction of property under $500. However, these charges were dropped when Brown was able to prove through global tracking systems from his cell phone that he was not in the area when the break-in occurred. Additionally, it became clear that the accusations were fueled more by the custody battle, than an actual belief that Brown had committed the crime. Court documents show that Mira Brown also filed three complaints of domestic violence against her former husband during the end of last September. All of these files are currently listed as closed.

Maryland DUI Lawyer: Timing Saves Man from Felony After 18th DUI

Throughout the career of an experienced Maryland DUI lawyer, it is likely to represent clients for more than one drunk driving charge. However, it is rare to find an individual with as many as Paul Garay, 55. It was announced December 29th, 2009 that state law prevented them from charging him with a felony DUI charge after he was arrested for the eighteenth time under suspicion of driving while intoxicated. After crashing his vehicle on Christmas Eve 2009, police registered his blood alcohol content to be 0.16--twice the legal limit. He was taken to the county jail, and bail was set for $24,000.

According to many state laws, a fourth drunk driving incident within a ten year period is a felony offense. However, because only two of Paul Garay's driving under the influence convictions were in the past ten years, he will only face gross misdemeanors.

According to court records, Garay has seventeen prior convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol. His latest one was nine years ago, while his first conviction was in 1977. Although many believe that the court system is too lenient on drunk drivers, records show that Garay had served him for his previous convictions. He had seven years of recovery from alcohol abuse, three of which were spent in a state prison.

Normally, with such a significant number of previous DUI convictions, the individual would receive a felony charge. However, because of the lapses in time between arrests, Garay will be charged with gross misdemeanors. Fortunately, no one was injured in his most recent drunk driving crash.

Facing drunk driving charges is a difficult and overwhelming process regardless of how many times a person is brought back to the court room. Conviction of driving while intoxicated charges can have life changing consequences including the loss of driving privileges, fines, and/or jail time. For the best legal defense available, it is important to contact a hard-working and trustworthy Maryland DUI attorney or Maryland criminal lawyer immediately.

Maryland DUI Lawyer: Alcohol Charges for Arrested NCAA Football Player

Practicing law in a metropolitan area, it is likely for a Maryland DUI lawyer to represent collegiate athletes who has been charged with driving while intoxicated. Examples of cases handled are much like the NCAA football player who was booked for a DUI after losing their bowl game. On New Year's Eve, sophomore center Ryan Wynn was arrested by law enforcement officials. Police observed that Wynn, 20, was noticeably intoxicated around 11:00 p.m., about four hours following the game.

Law enforcement officials pulled Wynn over, and administered a breathalyzer test. The results showed that Wynn's blood alcohol content was .17--twice the legal limit in the state of Arizona. He was arrested and charged with alcohol consumption by a minor, and could potentially receive driving while intoxicated charges as well. In order to prevent the violation from continuing, the football player was taken into custody, and would see a judge the next day. It is unconfirmed at this time what the sentence for the young athlete will be.

Wynn started twelve games for his university's NCAA football team in 2008. Although he ended spring season ranked first on the depth chart at the center position, a back injury kept him from participating in the entire 2009 season including the Insight bowl. After losing the bowl game, head coach Tim Brewster urged players to "conduct themselves appropriately on their final night in town." Because Wynn is a student athlete, he will unfortunately have to answer both to law enforcement agents and his university in regard to the alcohol related charges. What effect, if any, Wynn's arrest and charges will have on his participation in the 2010 college football season is unknown at this time.

Facing driving while intoxicated charges is an overwhelming and difficult process for anyone to go through. Conviction of a DUI will have life altering consequences including the loss of driving privileges, fines, and/or jail time. To best protect your personal freedoms and liberties, it is essential to contact a hard-working and experienced Maryland DUI attorney or Maryland criminal lawyer immediately.
